Io che tra i libri di fantascienza e non di fantascienza ho scritto e pubblicato più di duecento volumi, non ne avevo ancora mai pubblicato nessuno sulla fantascienza. Non che mi sia mai astenuto dall'esprimere le mie opinioni in questo campo. Anzi, ho scritto innumerevoli saggi e articoli su praticamente ogni aspetto della fs senza mai però riunirli e organizzarli in un volume. E chissà se o quando mai avrei pensato di farlo, se qualche tempo fa M. Greenberg non mi avesse detto: "Perchè non raccogli i tuoi saggi di fs in un volume organico che potresti intitolare Guida alla Fantascienza?". E' strano come piccole osservazioni di questo genere possano avviare tutta una serie di associazioni mentali mettendo finalmente capo a qualcosa di importante. Considerai per qualche istante il suggerimento di Greenberg, lo lasciai maturare per giorni nella mia mente, e d'un tratto mi balenò l'idea: - Ehi! - mi dissi. - Perchè non raccogliere i miei saggi di fs in un volume organico chei potrei intitolare per esempio Guida alla fantascienza?
